Mortem Vetus: Dark
Fae Wings Thank you for purchasing Dark Fae Wings. We hope you enjoy using this product, and this User Guide is intended to just help you get the most out of your purchase. Mostly, this guide will be covering the basic operation of the items included in the pack. Ok, first things first. This pack has been set to work with Poser 6 and newer. For the purposes of this guide, we'll be using PoserPro 2014, but there is nothing we'll be doing that can't be done in Poser 6 and above. And initially, pretty much everything is in default, except Render settings. Once you've installed the product, your new wings will be in Figures:MortemVetus:DarkFae: In this pack, we've included versions of the wings to fit Michael4, Victoria4 and Kids4. Fot this guide, we'll be using Victoria4, but everything we do is applicable to the M4 and K4 versions as well. So to get started, we'll load Victoria4. For the moment, we'll just leave her in default, and we'll load DarkFae_V4_Wings. When our wings are loaded, we want to conform them to Victoria. Make sure the wings are selected. Poser will automatically select the newest figure added for *most* figures, however, some it will not, so always check that the figure you're conforming is selected. It doesn't matter which body part you have selected for conforming, as long as the figure is selected. |

V4 Wings |
Image 1b: Select Conform To... |
So with the wings
selected, go to Figure > Conform To... as shown in
image 1b. A dialogue box will open, select Victoria4 from
the drop down list as shown in image 2a below. Click OK
and your wings are now conformed to Victoria4. So now when
we pose Victoria, the wings will follow with her. However, in most instances, we'll also want to pose the wings, so let's take a look at that. In image 2b below, we've applied a pose to Victoria, taken from Sluagh by IslandGirl. The Sluagh set has been built with these wings in mind, but is equally useable for any fairies you might want to use. We use IslandGirl's poses almost exclusively, and we most definately recommend them in the highest possible terms! Lora-Ly's poses rock, and with a selection of her sets, you won't need anything else. We've also put a dress on Victoria, which is one we made for our own use, that will likely find its way to Freestuff at some point. This has also been conformed to Victoria, as we did for the wings. |

Now we have Victoria
posed, let's take a look at the wings. Each wing has
three movements: Twist, Front-Back and Up-Down.
Front-Back is the one that will get the most use as this
flaps the wings, like a butterfly. In image 3a below, we
can see the parameter dials for the Right Wing, and
we've applied some Front-Back to that wing to turn it
round some towards a resting position. We've not taken
it all the way back, because we want to play around with
the morphs a bit next. The other two rotations, Twist and Up-Down will require very little movement, and should not be dialled too high as this may cause undesirable results. There may however be situations where a little extra movement is required from these dials, for appearances relative to the point of view being used in your image, so we have not set limits on these dials. Just bear in mind that these two dials are not supposed to dial very far. |

Image 3b: Applying morphs
to the wings |
We now
want to take a quick look at the morphs. In image 3b
above, we can see all the morphs for the Right Wing on its
parameter tab. Now, these wings are taking the basic idea
of how wings work on a butterfly, so really they ought to
be quite rigid. However, we felt they'd look a bit more interesting
if they could flex a little, so that's what most of the
morphs do. There are four morphs that have the prefix
'Position'. These should only be dialled from 'Body' as
dialling them on each wing will move them independantly.
That said, there *may* be times when you need to position
them independantly, so we've left these dials visible.
This will depend on your specific scene. The other morphs, which have either 'lWing' or 'rWing' prefixes, are intended to add a little shape to the wings. So let's try one out. In image 3s above, we've dialled a few morphs on, and if we compare it with image 3a, we can see some obvious differences. Please note, these morphs are not intended to completely change the shape of the wings, they are just intended to give the wings some flex. For this reason we have limited the morphs to a minimum of 0 and a maximum of 1. Play around using combinations of morphs and rotations to get varying appearances to the shape. |

Image 4a: MAT poses in the
library |
Image 4b: New textures on
both wings |
To further change the appearance of the
wings, there are also a number of texture options that you
can choose from. These are presented as pz2 MAT poses, and
fall into two groups: MainWings and Secondary wings. The
main wings are the larger fuller wings, and the
Secondaries are the thinner spiney ones in front. Each has
a number of options, as well as an 'off' setting. In image 4a above, we can see the library entries for the MAT poses, and we're going to change both wing parts, taking RedAdmiral for the main wings, and Burn for the secondaries, and we can see the result of this in image 4b above. To change the MAT's, make sure the wings are selected, then either double-click the library entry, or select the library entry and click the single tick symbol. |
One last thing...while these wings are
intended for Michael4/Victoria4/Kids4, they can just as
easily be used on other figures. In image5a below,
we've loaded Don, and a pair of V4 wings. We've
used V4 wings for this example because Michaels wings
actually fit Don quite well and need minimal adjustment.
As we can see, they are too far into his chest, so we want
to adjust them to fit and then make them stick to Don. We can't conform them, differences in rigging setups mean that if we try, it gets a bit funky and the wings end up in strange places. Instead, select Body on the wings as shown in image 5b below. We've now got two ways to position the wings...we can either use the translation dials, or we can use the position adjustment dials we've included. It doesn't really matter which we choose, although we would use the translation dials if the wings need significant movement to get to the right position, and the position adjustment dials for small tweaks to position. |

loaded |
Image 5b: Positioning dials |
To get these to fit Don, the main movement
we need is along the z axis, front-back. Since
they're too far forward in his chest, we want to dial up
'Position-Back' to bring them back to the right place as
we can see in image 6a below. Once they are in
position, all that's left is to make them stick to Don so
they move with him. As we've already noted, we can't
conform them. Instead, we want to go to the figure menu,
and select 'Set Figure Parent...' then find Don's
chest and select that, as shown in image 6b below. Click
OK and the wings are now parented to Don's chest, in the
same way as a parented prop. |

And that's it. As with all our products,
we've tried to create something that is distinct and
different, and useable with a minimum of fuss and trouble.
We hope you enjoy using this product and we look forward
to seeing what images you make with it. Happy Rendering Andrew and Tracey :) |
